The Election Commission has clarified that it will not overlook any incidents of violations of the election code of conduct.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on Friday, Election Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said the Commission has increased its vigilance to ensure compliance with the code of conduct and to bring violators under legal action.

He stated that in recent times, the practice of receiving and resolving complaints at the district level has increased, which has reduced the burden of complaints at the central level.

According to the Commission, explanations have so far been sought from 34 political parties and candidates, and responses have already been received from 24 of them. Bhattarai said the Central Code of Conduct Monitoring Committee will review the responses and decide on necessary action in accordance with the Election Offence and Punishment Act.

He also informed that a total of 3,135 candidates are contesting the election under 57 election symbols representing 63 political parties. Among them, 1,772 are women and 1,363 are men. The Commission’s data shows that the number of women candidates is higher than men under the proportional representation system.

Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to making the election process more systematic and improved, Bhattarai urged all concerned to strictly adhere to the election code of conduct.
