CPN lawmaker Ganga Kumari Belbase has urged the government to impose a complete ban on the use of the national flag during election rallies, processions, and campaigns.

Speaking during the special session of the National Assembly on Tuesday, Belbase said the national flag is being misused in the course of election campaigning. She pointed out that there is no mechanism to track how flags used during campaigns are managed, preserved, or cared for afterward. Flags worn around the neck like garlands during rallies have an unknown fate, she said, adding that there is no information on where they end up, how they are stored, or who takes responsibility for their upkeep.

Stressing that the national flag should not be used in election campaigns, Belbase called on the government to ban such practices entirely.

“The national flag must not be used in election campaigns. It should be completely prohibited. There is talk of action, but it is impossible to investigate where the flags worn like garlands have gone, how they are kept, or who is caring for them. This clearly shows misuse of the national flag, and the government must stop it altogether,” she said.

She also emphasized the need for effective implementation of legal provisions and punitive measures to prevent misuse of the national flag.
