Civil society organizations have urged political parties to include a proposal to reduce the number of members in Parliament and Provincial Assemblies in their election manifestos.
At a press conference on Wednesday, 16 civil society groups called on parties to prioritize civil rights, social justice, good governance, economic growth, and inclusion. They said the upcoming House of Representatives election on February 21, 2026, should be seen as a historic opportunity to strengthen democracy.
NGO Federation President Arjun Bhattarai said the constitution is a dynamic document and needs amendment to improve governance, strengthen federalism, and address citizens’ concerns. He stressed empowering provincial and local governments, making the National Assembly inclusive and expertise-based, and ensuring transparency in foreign aid and loan policies.
The groups also urged commitments to job creation, support for domestic production, zero tolerance for corruption, technology-friendly public services, free basic education and healthcare, transparent election spending, and concrete plans for environmental protection and climate resilience.
