Demand for “air taxi” services has surged in China as travel increases during the Spring Festival (Lunar New Year). Short-distance helicopter flights, especially between Shanghai and nearby coastal destinations, are gaining popularity as they cut travel time from several hours by road and ferry to just about 30 minutes.
The flight from Shanghai to Shengsi Island offers passengers scenic aerial views of Pudong, Lingang, the Donghai Bridge, and the open sea. Operators say bookings during the holiday rush have risen by around 1.5 times compared to regular periods, with advance reservations available through mini-programs.
The service is part of China’s growing “low-altitude economy,” which promotes short-distance routes using helicopters and small aircraft. Officials say these routes help ease road congestion and improve travel efficiency. Experts estimate the sector, currently valued at about $93 billion, could expand to $483 billion by 2035.
Despite ongoing policy discussions on safety, airspace coordination, and pricing, air taxis are emerging as an effective travel alternative during peak seasons.
