Chinese electric car company BYD has launched a new charging system that can charge electric cars as fast as refueling a petrol car. The company also announced plans to build a charging network across China.
According to The Guardian, the new system, called "Super E-Platform," can charge at 1,000 kilowatts. Cars using this system can travel up to 400 kilometers with just five minutes of charging. BYD’s founder, Wang Chuanfu, shared this information during a live event on March 17.
If BYD’s system works as claimed, it will be twice as fast as Tesla’s Supercharger, which offers a maximum speed of 500 kilowatts. Experts believe that faster charging technology will make electric vehicles more popular.
Reports suggest this could be a challenge for Tesla, which is already facing difficulties. Tesla’s stock recently dropped by 15% on March 10. The company is also facing competition from BYD and other Chinese brands offering cheaper electric cars.
