Nearly 250 individuals arrested for alleged involvement in vandalism, arson, looting, and attacks on police during the GenZ protest on September 9 (Bhadra 24) have been released on bail ahead of the Dashain festival.
According to the Metropolitan Police Office, those detained from various police units under its command were freed following the Home Ministry’s directive not to conduct further arrests or detentions until the Judicial Probe Commission submits its report on the incident.
SP Pawan Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, confirmed that the detainees were released after giving their statements. Many of them claimed they were wrongly implicated after being caught in the crowd during the protest.
Police, however, stated that all statements, video evidence, photos, and eyewitness accounts have been collected, and the investigation will continue.
According to police sources, individuals accused of serious offenses, including the murder of police personnel, theft of firearms, and arson at Maharajgunj and Koteshwor remain in custody and will face legal proceedings.
Authorities have clarified that while many have been released on bail, those proven guilty will not be exempt from punishment once investigations are concluded.
