The 43rd National Magar Unity Day is being celebrated across Nepal today with various programs. This day is observed every year on the 15th of Falgun to honor the unity of the Magar people in protecting their rights and identity. It also marks the establishment of the Nepal Magar Association.
Different districts of Lumbini Province, where many Magar people live, have organized various events. Similarly, in several places in Nawalparasi cultural processions and other programs are taking place.
Bhumbahadur Rai Magar, the district president of the Nepal Magar Association, said that this day helps preserve traditional Magar folk cultures like Salaijo, Jhyaures, and Kauda, which are at risk of disappearing. It also helps educate the younger generation about the Magar language, culture, history, traditions, and way of life.
According to the National Census of 2078, there are 2,013,498 Magar people in Nepal, making up 6.9 percent of the total population.
On this occasion, several local governments, including those in Lumbini and Gandaki provinces and other Magar-majority areas, have announced a public holiday today.
