The Nepali Embassy in New Delhi has confirmed that 26 Nepalis are missing after last week’s floods and landslides in India’s Uttarakhand.
According to the embassy, 21 people went missing in Dharali, Uttarkashi, when a river swollen by heavy rains swept through the town, destroying homes and hotels. Five others remain unaccounted for in Bankura, Pauri Garhwal, following a deadly landslide.
Relatives who searched for the missing in Pauri Garhwal for five days have returned home without success.
Thousands of Nepalis work in Uttarakhand’s hotels, agriculture, and road projects often in high risk hillside areas without formal work permits or insurance, leaving families vulnerable when disasters strike.
