At least 10 people, including six children, lost their lives on Sunday in an Israeli air strike while they were waiting to fill water containers in central Gaza's al-Nuseirat refugee camp, according to emergency service officials. Eyewitnesses reported that a drone targeted the crowd gathered near a water tanker. Sixteen others, including seven children, were injured and taken to al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat.
This attack is part of a broader escalation of Israeli air strikes across Gaza. Gaza's Civil Defense Agency also reported 19 additional deaths from separate strikes on residential buildings in central Gaza and Gaza City the same day.
Since Israel launched its military operation in response to Hamas's October 7, 2023, attack which killed around 1,200 people and saw over 250 taken hostage, more than 57,800 people have died in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
The humanitarian situation continues to worsen. Over 90% of homes are damaged or destroyed, and Gaza faces severe shortages of food, fuel, medicine, and shelter. Although 75,000 litres of fuel were allowed in this week for the first time in months, the UN says it's far from enough. Nine UN agencies have warned that fuel shortages are now critically affecting hospitals, ambulances, water systems, and bakeries.
