Voting has started to elect the new leader of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party in Bagmati Province. The election is taking place at the Bagmati Provincial Assembly building.
Two candidates are in the race: Indra Bahadur Baniya, a provincial lawmaker, and Bahadur Singh Lama, the current Chief Minister of Bagmati Province. Lama lost his position as party leader after a no-confidence motion against him received a majority vote on Tuesday.
The vote is being held today to choose a new leader. Out of 37 lawmakers in Bagmati, 22 are reportedly supporting Baniya, while 15 are backing Lama. To become the new leader, a simple majority is required.
According to election committee coordinator Hari Sharan Shrestha, the voting will continue until 3 PM, and the counting of votes will begin immediately after.
