A 58-year-old woman has died in Mie Prefecture while attempting to evacuate following tsunami warnings triggered by a powerful earthquake early Wednesday.

According to local authorities, the woman was driving to a safer area in Kumano City's Homo Town when her car veered off a national highway and plunged approximately 30 meters off a cliff. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred after an 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck offshore, prompting immediate tsunami alerts across Japan and nearby regions. Waves have already reached Hokkaido, Japan’s northern island, and Russia’s Kuril Islands.

Authorities continue to urge residents in coastal areas to evacuate to higher ground as aftershocks and further tsunami waves remain a threat. Rescue and safety operations are ongoing.
