The Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Hitendra Dev Shakya, has said that the NEA is ready to provide electricity at a discounted rate of Rs 3 per unit for irrigation in the Madhes region.

This decision follows Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s plan to install 500 borewells in drought-affected areas of Madhes. On Tuesday, Shakya met with local NEA officials in Janakpurdham to talk about how to manage the electricity supply for these borewells.

He mentioned that the NEA is prepared to supply electricity for irrigation in districts like Siraha, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Saptari, and Sarlahi. He also discussed with his team how to ensure power is available in the areas where the borewells will be set up.

However, Shakya said they are still waiting for clear details from the concerned authorities about the exact locations of the borewells. He stressed that helping farmers is a national responsibility and that the NEA is dedicated to solving their problems.

Currently, electricity costs Rs 8 per unit, but for irrigation, the NEA will offer it at a much lower price of Rs 3 per unit. Shakya added that the borewells are expected to be installed within a month.
