Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that he hopes there will be no need to use nuclear weapons in the war with Ukraine. He made this statement during an interview broadcast on Russian state-controlled television on Sunday.
In the interview, Putin said that there has not yet been any situation in Ukraine that would require the use of nuclear weapons. He clearly stated that he hopes such a situation will never come. According to him, Russia has the strength, ability and resources to find a reasonable solution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Putin also mentioned that Russia is capable of solving the issue with logic and without going to extreme measures. He said Russia is not in a position where it must use nuclear weapons, and he expects the situation to remain that way.
Earlier, in November 2024, Putin had changed the official policy related to the use of nuclear weapons in Russia. After the change, he gained more power and flexibility to use such weapons if needed. This policy change allows the Russian government to consider nuclear options more openly in certain situations.
However, despite the change in policy, Putin now says that using nuclear weapons is not necessary at this point. He repeated that he hopes the conflict does not reach that stage.
