Senior officials from the United States and Iran are expected to hold direct talks in Oman in an effort to reduce rising tensions that have sparked fears of a military confrontation. The talks come amid a US military build-up in the Middle East and growing pressure on Iran following its violent crackdown on nationwide anti-government protests, BBC reported.

The US is pushing Iran to freeze its nuclear programme and give up its enriched uranium stockpile, while also raising concerns over ballistic missiles, regional armed groups and human rights. Iran, however, says the discussions will focus only on its nuclear programme and has rejected broader demands.

The Iranian delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the US side will include special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Although both sides remain far apart, the Oman talks are seen as a crucial attempt to de-escalate tensions and open the door for future negotiations.
