Two American citizens, detained in Afghanistan since 2022, have been freed in a prisoner exchange with the Taliban, according to the family of one of them, Ryan Corbett.

The Taliban confirmed that Corbett and another American were swapped for Khan Mohammad, a convicted narco-terrorist. Mohammad was arrested in 2006 in Afghanistan, extradited to the U.S., and sentenced to life in prison for plotting attacks on U.S. soldiers and trafficking drugs.

After years of separation from their loved one, the Corbett family expressed gratitude to both the Biden and Trump administrations for their efforts in securing his release and appreciated the efforts of everyone involved in the negotiations.

While Corbett’s release brings relief to his loved ones, at least two other Americans remain in Taliban custody. Negotiations for their release are ongoing, though a potential swap involving a Guantanamo Bay prisoner was considered too complex and ultimately decided against it by U.S. officials. .
