US President Donald Trump has announced a major policy targeting films made outside the United States. According to international news agency Reuters, Trump has declared that any film shot outside the US will now face a 100 percent tax when brought into the country.
Trump made this announcement on Sunday and also shared it through his social media platform, Truth Social. He said the goal of this move is to revive Hollywood, which he believes is facing a serious decline.
"The American film industry is dying," Trump wrote. "This step is necessary to bring life back to Hollywood and protect American jobs."
He accused other countries of offering special incentives and benefits to American filmmakers and studios, encouraging them to shoot films abroad. Trump said this strategy has badly hurt Hollywood and several other industries in the U.S. He even called it a "planned effort by foreign countries" and claimed it is a threat to national security.
As a result, Trump said he has directed the US Department of Commerce and trade representatives to start taxing all foreign-made films entering the US at 100 percent.
“This will begin immediately,” he wrote. “We want movies to be made here in America.”
Reuters also reported that film and television production in Hollywood has dropped by around 40 percent over the past year. The situation worsened after a major fire in January, which further affected the industry.
Trump’s announcement has sparked debate, with some supporting the effort to boost local jobs, while others are concerned about the impact on global filmmaking and international collaboration.
