Monkeypox is a spreadable disease caused by the monkeypox virus which belongs to a group of viruses called Orthopox. Monkeypox is a rare disease that usually affects the people with low weaker immune systems, such as pregnant women, children and people dealing with certain medical conditions. The virus spreads through the close contact with infected people or animals. There is no any specific treatment for monkeypox virus but can be prevented by taking certain precautions. While it’s similar to smallpox, it is usually less severe, and people often recover in a few weeks with proper care.

Talking about its types, monkeypox has two main forms: Clade I and Clade II. Clade I is more dangerous and has caused severe illness and deaths in the past compared to clade II. On the other hand, clade II is less severe type of monkeypox. These both type of monkeypox spread through same way and also can be avoided by adopting same methods.

The name Monkeypox originates from the initial discovery of the virus in monkeys in a Danish laboratory in 1958. Speaking of the case of the monkeypox, it was reported in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Understanding how this virus spreads is an important factor to remain safe. The main causes of monkeypox that we should know are as follows:

  • The virus often spreads from human to human or from animals to humans due to close contact.
  • Not maintaining good hygiene after coming into contact with people who have red rashes on their skin.
  • Sharing or touching contaminated objects used by an infected person.
  • Getting bites or scratch from animals.
  • Breathing in droplets from an infected person's cough or sneeze.

People suffering from monkeypox virus may have different symptoms from each other. Monkeypox symptoms are like smallpox but are usually milder. Regarding symptoms, people will experience the following:

  • Fever with sweating
  • Headache
  • Muscle and back pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Tiredness
  • Skin rash

These symptoms then turn into a rash with red bumps or pimples that later become pus-filled blister.

To stay safe from monkeypox, it's important to follow the given precautions wisely:

  • Avoiding the close contact with people especially those with exposed skin can lower the risk of monkeypox.
  • Always wash your hands with soap right after touching a person or animal.
  • Make sure to get plenty of rest and eat healthy foods to keep your body strong.
  • Isolate yourself if you feel sick to prevent spreading the virus.
  • Strictly avoid touching the contaminated objects of an infected person.
  • Get medical advice immediately if you see red rashes.
  • Maintaining good hygiene and cleaning your environment also reduce the risk of spreading virus.
