Former Home Minister and Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal Chairman Kamal Thapa was arrested on Sunday during a royalist protest at Narayan Chaur in Kathmandu.

The demonstration, organized by the Joint Movement Committee of royalists, was heading toward the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar when police intervened and stopped the rally. Tensions quickly rose as police detained several protesters, including Thapa, who was leading the march.

Eyewitnesses reported that Thapa was dragged away by security personnel, triggering clashes between police and demonstrators who resisted being dispersed.

Earlier, RPP Chairman Rajendra Lingden addressed the gathering, warning the government that continued suppression of the royalist movement would provoke a strong backlash.

The protest marked the third consecutive week of royalist demonstrations since May 29.
