Popular social media platform, TikTok has announced that it will shut down in the US on Sunday unless the government delays a ban set to take effect.
The ban is set to take effect because TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has not sold its US operations, as required by a law passed last year. The law claims TikTok’s ties to China pose a threat of data sharing with Beijing, a claim TikTok denies. The company has refused to sell its US operations, arguing the ban violates free speech rights for its 170 million American users.
The ban in the platform means, Tiktok will be removed from the app stores and will eventually stop working. TikTok has also warned that it could become unavailable immediately once the ban begins.
The news has left many content creators and influencers shocked and feeling powerless, as their careers were built on TikTok. Some are already posting goodbye videos to their followers, while others are moving to similar apps like the Chinese platform Red Note.
With the Sunday deadline approaching, TikTok’s future in the US remains uncertain, leaving its users, creators, and 7,000 employees in doubt.
