Nepalis across the country are marking Dhanteras today, signaling the start of the five-day Tihar festival. The day, which falls on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, is observed with the purchase of gold, silver, copper, and other metal items believed to attract wealth and good fortune.
As part of the Vedic Sanatan Hindu tradition, devotees worship Goddess Laxmi using the newly bought items during Laxmi Puja on Kartik Krishna Aunsi. The belief holds that such offerings bring prosperity and continued blessings to the household.
Jewelry shops and utensil stores have seen a rise in sales as people uphold the long-standing custom of buying precious metals on Dhanteras.
Known as Deepawali, Yamapanchak, or the festival of lights, Tihar is the second most significant festival in Nepal after Dashain. The celebrations illuminate homes, businesses, and streets across the nation, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness.
According to the Nepal Calendar Determination Committee, while Yamapanchak begins today, Kaag Tihar, the first official day of Tihar, will be observed on Sunday.
