Pakistan has taken strong steps against India following a deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir that killed 26 people. The attack, which happened at a popular tourist spot, was the worst civilian attack in India in nearly 20 years. In response, Pakistan announced on Thursday that it is closing its airspace to all Indian-owned and Indian-operated airlines.
It also said it will stop all trade with India, including goods passing through Pakistan from other countries. Pakistan strongly objected to India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, an important agreement that controls how the two countries share river water. The Pakistan government warned that any move by India to block or redirect water flow to Pakistan would be seen as an “act of war.” Pakistan also asked Indian military advisers at its High Commission to leave the country by April 30.
On the other side, India also took steps to reduce its ties with Pakistan. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the government found proof linking the Kashmir attack to cross-border elements during a special security meeting. India immediately suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and declared Pakistan’s defence advisers in New Delhi as “persona non grata,” meaning they are no longer welcome. They have been ordered to leave the country. India also said it will reduce the number of its staff in the High Commission in Islamabad from 55 to 30. The main border crossing between the two countries is being shut down, and special visas for Pakistani nationals to visit India have been cancelled. Both countries are taking firm stands as tensions continue to grow.
