South Korea's Air Force has confirmed that a KF-16 fighter jet accidentally dropped eight bombs in the wrong location during a training exercise on Thursday, causing injuries and property damage.
The incident took place around 10:00 AM in Pocheon, a city located 25 kilometers south of the North Korean border. The bombs, identified as MK-82 general-purpose bombs, were supposed to land within a designated military range but instead fell on a nearby village.
According to the South Korean National Fire Agency, at least four people were seriously injured, while three others suffered minor injuries. A church and two houses, were damaged in the explosion forcing many residents to evacuate.
The Air Force expressed deep regret over the incident and has launched an investigation committee to determine what went wrong. Officials have also promised to compensate victims for the damages.
The accident happened during a joint live-fire exercise involving both South Korean and U.S. forces. The two countries are set to begin their annual "Freedom Shield" military exercises later this month.
This is not the first time a military accident has occurred in South Korea. In 2022, a South Korean Hyunmu-2 ballistic missile crashed into a military golf course after a failed launch, though no injuries were reported at that time.
