Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a temporary ceasefire with Ukraine for three days. According to Russia, the ceasefire will start on May 8 and continue until May 11.

Putin made this decision to mark the occasion of Victory Day, which celebrates the end of World War II. The Russian government hopes that Ukraine will also issue a similar order. International media, quoting Moscow, reported this expectation. However, Russia also warned that if there are any violations of the ceasefire, they are ready to respond.

This is not the first time Russia has called for a temporary ceasefire. Earlier, during the Easter holiday, Putin also announced a ceasefire. However, both sides accused each other of attacks during that time.

Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, it has taken control of large parts of four Ukrainian regions.

The situation between Russia and Ukraine remains tense, and previous ceasefires have not lasted long. Still, the announcement for a 72-hour break in fighting is seen as an effort to lower tensions during the Victory Day celebrations.

It remains to be seen whether both sides will respect this new ceasefire.
