In a dramatic turn of events, police personnel in civvies rearrested on Wednesday the patron of Nagarik Unmukti Party, Resham Lal Chaudhary, from the Nepal Academy complex in Kamaladi where the stage was all set for the unification of his party with the CK Raut-led Janamati Party.

The arrest came just before the start of a formal ceremony announcing the unification of the two parties, effectively shelving the unification, after which supporters started shouting slogans against the government.

Meanwhile, police have taken Chaudhary to the Dillibazaar jail for the implementation of a court verdict in a case filed against him in relation to August 2015 Tikapur carnage in which seven police, personnel, including Laxman Neupane, a senior superintendent of police, and a 1.5-year-old child, Tek Bahadur Saud, had lost their lives.
In 2017, the Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal had fielded Chaudhary as a candidate for parliamentary elections from Kailali-1 while he was underground, Chaudhary had won that election. Although sworn in as a member of the House of Representatives on January 3, 2019, he couldn’t work as a lawmaker.

Sentenced to life imprisonment for the carnage along with several others, Chaudhary had walked free after a presidential pardon on the Republic Day (May 28) in 2023.
