Prime Minister Sushila Karki said that Nepal already has enough laws and institutions to control corruption, but stronger accountability within government offices is still needed.

Speaking at the 35th anniversary of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), she asked why corruption continues despite existing rules. “Why did young people have to protest on September 8 and 9 demanding action against corruption?” she questioned.

She emphasized that the main responsibility to control corruption lies with the government itself. “Heads of every department or office must ensure corruption is stopped within their institutions,” she said.

PM Karki added that relying only on external agencies won’t bring the needed changes. “If corruption or bribery happens in an office, the head of that office is responsible. Every civil servant, political leader, and stakeholder must understand this and act responsibly,” she said.

The Prime Minister also highlighted that her government has been careful with public money. “We have stopped unnecessary hiring that drains state funds and cut budgets for programs prone to misuse. Strict actions have been taken against those seeking undeserved benefits,” she said.

She assured citizens that services like citizenship, passports, and driving licenses will be simple, fast, and accessible.

Finally, PM Karki said that a governance roadmap to guide future governments in promoting good governance is almost ready.
