Kathmandu Metropolitan City has started a school-based HPV vaccination campaign, targeting girls aged 10–14. The vaccine protects against HPV types responsible for over 95% of oral cancers, with types 16 and 18 causing around 80% of cases in Nepal.

Girls at Durbar High School have been administered the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine.
This vaccination campaign, aimed at preventing oral cancer, was carried out under the supervision of healthcare workers.
From Tuesday, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has launched a campaign to provide HPV vaccines to school-going girls. On Tuesday, the Health Department of Kathmandu Metropolitan City inaugurated the school-based HPV vaccination program at Padyamkanya Vidyashram Secondary School in Dillibazar. The campaign will continue until Falgun 6.
More than 95% of oral cancers are caused by HPV. There are over 200 types of HPV, but at least 12 types are the main contributors to oral cancer. In Nepal, around 80% of oral cancers are caused by HPV types 16 and 18.
According to doctors, regular screening and vaccinating girls aged 10 to 14 against HPV can prevent most oral cancers.
