A passenger plane carrying 64 people crashed into the Potomac River in Washington, DC, near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport at around 9:00 pm local time (02:00 GMT) Wednesday. Authorities have launched an investigation, and all flights have been temporarily grounded.
So far, eighteen bodies have been pulled out from the Potomac River. Search teams, consisting of around 300 first responders, are working in challenging cold and dark conditions to continue the rescue operation.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing unusual activity in the sky before the crash. Some described sparks coming from an aircraft, while others noted irregular flight patterns near the airport.
Government officials, including President Donald Trump and key agency leaders, have expressed concern and are closely monitoring the situation. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have confirmed an investigation is underway.
American Airlines CEO Robert Isom released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the incident. More details on the incident are expected as authorities proceed with their response.
