The government of Nepal is preparing to take a proposal to the World Health Organization (WHO) saying that the country where a worker goes for labor should be responsible for the workers' healthcare.
Health and Population Minister Pradip Paudel, who has just returned from the World Health Assembly, said Nepal will present this proposal at the next year’s World Health Assembly.
Minister Paudel explained that many workers face serious health problems while working abroad. Nepal wants the country that hires these workers to take full responsibility for their healthcare.
Nepal has already shared this idea at the current WHO meeting. If the proposal is approved, the destination country for the workers will have to provide health support and information about the worker’s health condition.
This will help end problems like workers returning home without proper treatment, not being able to afford full healthcare, or difficulties in sending the bodies of those who die back to their home countries, the minister said.
