Nepal is observing the 19th Democracy Day today to honor those who sacrificed their lives in the fight for democracy. The day marks the historic announcement made on April 24, 2006 (Baisakh 11, 2063 BS) by the then King Gyanendra Shah, who restored the dissolved parliament and gave up his executive powers, ending absolute monarchy in the country. This move came after a powerful people’s movement led by seven major political parties along with the then-rebel Maoists, which pressured the monarchy to step back.
Following this, Nepal transitioned into a federal democratic republic, and the country adopted a new constitution on September 20, 2015 (Ashoj 3, 2072 BS). Since then, federal, provincial, and local elections have been held twice, promoting federalism and improving service delivery and disaster response through better coordination among different levels of government.
On this day, political leaders have called for unity among all parties to ensure prosperity and maintain the democratic system.
