Tensions between the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and industrialists over unpaid power tariffs have eased after ten manufacturing companies made the first installment of their long-overdue bills. The payments came following mediation by the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).

The firms, including Everest Rolling Mill, SR Steel, Panchakanya Steel, Panchakanya Plastic, Goyanka Foods, and others had their power supply restored after it was previously disconnected. The FNCCI proposed that companies pay dues in installments as a security deposit while the NEA reconnected their lines.

The dispute originates from a premium tariff system introduced in 2015, which charged higher rates to industries on dedicated feeders and trunk lines for uninterrupted power during peak load-shedding. Many companies had refused to pay, calling the charges unfair.

NEA data shows that 49 firms still owe about Rs 8 billion. The authority now allows companies to settle arrears in up to 28 installments or request an administrative review if they contest the charges.
