Typhoon Kalmaegi has claimed at least 188 lives in the Philippines and five in Vietnam, leaving hundreds missing and tens of thousands displaced, the BBC reported on Friday.
The storm struck central Vietnam on Thursday with winds up to 149 km/h, uprooting trees, tearing off roofs, and flooding towns. Over 260,000 military personnel were deployed to assist relief efforts, with authorities warning of further flooding in low-lying areas.
Earlier, Kalmaegi devastated central Philippines, especially Cebu, dumping a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours. Flash floods and landslides destroyed homes, particularly in poorer neighborhoods, prompting President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to declare a state of emergency.
The typhoon is now moving west toward Cambodia and Laos, with authorities in the region on high alert.
