A large forest fire continues to ravage Ofunato in northeastern Japan, burning over 1,200 hectares of land in just a few days.

The blaze, which began few days ago in a work shed and quickly spread to nearby forests due to dry weather and strong winds, has already destroyed 84 homes and claimed one life, making it the worst fire in the region in 30 years.

Local authorities are on high alert as the full extent of the damage remains unclear. Over 3,300 people have been ordered to evacuate from the area, and officials warn that the fire could worsen without any expected rain in the coming days.

In response to the crisis, more than 2,500 firefighters from various prefectures have been deployed to the scene. They are working alongside 16 helicopters including seven from the Japanese Army that are helping to drop water on the flames and reach inaccessible areas.

A government spokesperson for Iwate Prefecture told NHK that the dry conditions and strong winds are making the fire very difficult to control. The situation is being closely monitored as rescue teams continue to work in the most affected areas.

With the risk of new fires still high due to the ongoing dry weather, authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and follow evacuation orders.
