A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 shook eastern Russia early this morning, causing panic and raising fears of a possible tsunami. The quake struck near the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, about 136 kilometers away, at a depth of around 18 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Soon after the earthquake, aftershocks were felt in the area, and several people were reported injured, according to Russia’s TASS news agency. Emergency teams are on alert as the situation continues to unfold.
The quake has triggered tsunami warnings for parts of Russia, Japan, and the U.S. state of Alaska. People living near the coastlines in these areas have been urged to stay alert and move to higher ground as a safety measure. U.S. officials have also warned that Hawaii could be at risk.
Tsunamis are powerful sea waves caused by underwater earthquakes, and they can lead to serious destruction when they reach land.
Experts say this is the strongest earthquake in the region since 1952. In fact, the same area has experienced several earthquakes in the past 10 days — including five on July 20 alone — raising concerns about continued seismic activity.
