Kathmandu Metropolitan City has issued a warning to schools that forbid students from speaking Nepali. The warning follows complaints that some schools within the city are penalizing students for speaking Nepali on school grounds.
The Education Department of Kathmandu Metropolitan City wrote to all community and private schools on Monday, instructing that, except for subjects taught in English, English should not be made mandatory in other activities.
The letter also highlighted complaints that some schools were punishing or fining students for using Nepali on the school premises. It directed these schools to immediately stop such practices and reminded them that only English should be used as the medium of instruction for specific subjects, not for general communication.
