At least 27 people lost their lives when the roof of the Jet Set nightclub collapsed in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, on Tuesday, according to official reports.
The collapse took place in the early hours of the morning during a live music event. Emergency services confirmed that 134 people were rescued with injuries and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Juan Manuel Mendez, director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), said that rescue operations are still ongoing and there is hope that some individuals may still be alive under the debris. “We won’t stop until everyone is accounted for,” he added.
Rescue teams and volunteers reported hearing voices calling for help from under the rubble, which has led to increased efforts at the scene.
Jet Set is a popular nightclub in Santo Domingo, known for hosting live performances during the week. On the night of the incident, well-known Dominican jazz and merengue singer Rubby Perez was scheduled to perform.
President Luis Abinader expressed his condolences through social media and stated that he has been closely monitoring the situation. He confirmed that all emergency agencies are actively involved in the rescue operations and extended prayers to the affected families.
The cause of the roof collapse is currently under investigation.
