Israel has launched an airstrike on the Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza, causing significant damage to the hospital’s ICU and surgery departments. Videos posted on social media show large fires and smoke rising from the two-story building after the missile hit. Some patients, seen on video, were fleeing from the hospital. Gaza’s civil emergency services have reported no casualties so far from this specific attack.
This airstrike is not the first on the hospital. In October 2023, a previous attack on the same hospital led to the deaths of hundreds of people. This followed a deadly attack by Hamas on Israel, where over 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage. In response, Israel launched airstrikes on Gaza, escalating the conflict further.
The ongoing conflict has led to a devastating loss of life in Gaza. According to Gaza’s Hamas-controlled health ministry, more than 50,933 people have died since the attacks began. The situation in the region has worsened as airstrikes and ground attacks continue with no sign of a ceasefire.
Although a temporary ceasefire was agreed upon in February 2024, Israeli airstrikes resumed on March 18, 2024. Since the resumption of attacks, at least 1,563 more people have lost their lives, further deepening the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The violence has left many people in urgent need of medical aid and basic supplies, with hospitals like Al-Ahli struggling to provide care.
