India has given official permission to Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service to start operating in the country. This is an important step to bring fast internet to many remote and rural areas in India.
The Communications Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, said that Starlink will help connect more people across India. He also met with Gwynne Shotwell, the president of SpaceX, who said this is a good beginning.
Starlink is run by Musk’s company SpaceX. It uses many small satellites close to Earth to provide fast internet, especially in places where regular internet is hard to get.
This decision comes at a time when there is a big discussion in India about how to manage and price internet spectrum.
Elon Musk has had disagreements with Mukesh Ambani, the owner of Jio Platforms, about how satellite internet spectrum should be given out.
Earlier this year, Jio Platforms and another company, Bharti Airtel, teamed up with SpaceX to offer Starlink services to their customers. This shows the competition is growing in satellite internet in India.
Right now, Musk’s main work in India is his social media app X. But his electric car company Tesla is also getting ready to enter the Indian market, showing that Musk may expand more businesses in India soon.
