Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has asked the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee to pass the Bill to Amend the Nepal Citizenship Act, 2006 during the current parliamentary session.
At a meeting held in Singha Durbar on Friday, he said the bill is important to solve long-standing citizenship problems and should be passed soon.
He explained that many young Nepalis are still without citizenship due to legal issues. The bill aims to make sure all eligible people can get citizenship.
It will help children born to Nepali citizens by birth and also those whose father’s identity is unknown, especially children born abroad.
Minister Lekhak also said that a draft bill for Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) has been prepared.
Committee Chair Ramhari Khatiwada said discussions are ongoing to pass the bill this session. He added that the next meeting will include talks with representatives of the NRN community.
