Russia launched one of its biggest air attacks on Ukraine early Friday, targeting the capital Kyiv and other cities including Lutsk and Ternopil. Ukrainian officials say at least three people were killed and 49 others injured in the strikes, though some reports say the death toll could be higher, BBC reported.

The attack used over 400 drones and more than 40 missiles, hitting homes, schools, emergency services, and even metro tracks. Kyiv residents spent hours in underground shelters as the city shook from explosions and gunfire from air defenses trying to shoot down drones.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the casualties and said the strikes killed three emergency workers. He called on the U.S., Europe, and the world to act quickly and put pressure on Russia. “Delaying action only helps the war to continue,” he warned.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry said the attack was a response to Ukraine’s recent drone strike on Russian airbases. They claimed the targets were military-related and said 174 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight in Russia and Crimea.

The strikes came days after Ukraine’s biggest drone mission, called "Spider’s Web", which reportedly damaged around 34% of Russia’s missile-carrying aircraft.

Fighting also continues in Kharkiv, Sumy, and Luhansk, where air raid sirens are still active. In Ternopil, officials said this was the biggest air attack on the region so far, causing injuries and damage to homes and public buildings. In Lutsk, six missiles and 15 drones were used, injuring five people.

Amid all this, peace talks between Ukraine and Russia held earlier this month ended without progress. Ukraine had asked for a full ceasefire, but Russia only offered a short truce in some areas, without details.

Adding to the tension, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin told him he would respond “very strongly” to Ukraine’s recent attacks. Trump hinted that he may change how the U.S. supports Ukraine if peace efforts don’t move forward soon.

The war shows no signs of slowing down, and with both sides launching major strikes, the situation remains highly dangerous for millions of civilians.
