At least five people were killed when gunmen attacked a group of tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, officials told the BBC. The shooting happened in Baisaran, a scenic meadow near the popular tourist town of Pahalgam, often called the “Switzerland of India.”

Several others were injured and taken to hospital. Police and army teams rushed to the area, which has now been sealed off while a search is underway to catch those responsible.

Kashmir's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called it one of the worst attacks on civilians in recent years and expressed shock, saying, “This attack on our visitors is an abomination.”

The region’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also condemned the violence and confirmed that security forces were at the scene.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility. While violence in the region has decreased in recent years, Kashmir has faced a long-standing conflict since 1989.

Authorities continue to investigate, and more updates are expected soon.
