The Department of Commerce, Supply and Consumer Protection has introduced a maximum retail price (MRP) for bottled and jar water, one of Nepal’s most widely used daily essentials.

Under the new pricing structure, a one-liter bottle of water will now cost Rs 16 inside the Kathmandu Valley and Rs 20 outside the Valley, while a 20-liter jar will be sold for Rs 47 inside the Valley and Rs 60 outside.

The move comes amid growing complaints that traders had been charging inconsistent and inflated prices for bottled and jar water in the absence of regulation.

The department has warned that strict action will be taken against anyone found selling above the government-fixed rate, as per the Consumer Protection Act 2018 and its related regulations.

Authorities have also urged the public to report any instances of overpricing or violations to the department or its local offices to ensure fair market practices.
