December 5 brings global attention to two important causes as International Volunteer Day and World Soil Day are being observed worldwide under the call of the United Nations.
International Volunteer Day, launched in 1985, recognizes the vital role of volunteers and encourages volunteerism at all levels of society. On this occasion, the UN has urged member states to integrate volunteer efforts into national development plans and strengthen awareness campaigns. Programs are being held today at the UN General Assembly Hall in New York to mark the day.
In his message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres thanked volunteers across the world for their selfless service. He noted that their work in disaster response, conflict-affected communities, and poverty reduction continues to inspire hope and solidarity. Currently, UN Volunteers are working in 169 countries in support of peace, justice, and equality.
Alongside this, World Soil Day is also being observed to raise awareness about the importance of healthy soil and sustainable soil management. The observance emphasizes the need for soil protection for food security, environmental balance, and climate resilience. The United Nations declared World Soil Day in 2013 to encourage collective action toward soil conservation.
