France has announced it will officially recognize Palestine as an independent state. French President Emmanuel Macron said the formal recognition will take place this September during the United Nations General Assembly session in New York.

Sharing the update on social media platform X, President Macron emphasized that the most urgent need is to end the war in Gaza and ensure the safety of civilians. He called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and large-scale humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza.

Palestinian officials welcomed Macron’s decision, calling it a positive step. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly criticized it, saying that recognizing Palestine as a state is like rewarding terrorism.

President Macron said the decision was made to support a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

The U.S. reacted negatively to France’s announcement. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the move would only strengthen Hamas propaganda.

More than 140 out of the 193 UN member states have already recognized Palestine as an independent state. This includes European countries like Spain and Ireland. However, key allies of Israel, including the U.S. and the U.K., have not recognized Palestinian statehood
