France and Canada have officially opened their consulates in Nuuk, Greenland, highlighting growing international focus on the Arctic. The move follows former U.S. President Trump’s remarks about Greenland’s strategic importance, which sparked global attention.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand emphasized Arctic cooperation and the involvement of local communities, while Governor General Mary Simon, an Inuit leader, attended as a symbolic commitment.
France appointed Jean-Noël Poirier as its first Consul General, marking the first EU member state diplomatic presence in Greenland. The consulates aim to strengthen cultural, scientific, economic, and political ties, signaling international support for Greenland’s self-determination.
