Former US President Joe Biden (82) has been diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to his bones. The diagnosis came after he visited his doctor due to urinary symptoms. Medical tests confirmed an aggressive form of cancer, with a Gleason score of 9 out of 10, suggesting it may spread quickly. However, doctors say the cancer is hormone-sensitive, which means it can likely be managed with treatment, BBC reported.

Biden and his family are currently exploring treatment options. His diagnosis has drawn widespread support. Former President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump sent best wishes for his recovery. Former vice-president Kamala Harris and former president Barack Obama also expressed their support, praising Biden’s strength and commitment to fighting cancer. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also offered well wishes.

The news comes nearly a year after Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race due to health concerns. He was replaced by Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate. Since then, Biden has kept a low profile, appearing occasionally at public events and in interviews.

Biden lost his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015 and has long been an advocate for cancer research. He led the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative under President Obama and relaunched it in 2022 with the goal of preventing millions of cancer deaths by 2047.

Experts say bone-spread prostate cancer is usually not curable but can be treated effectively. Dr William Dahut of the American Cancer Society said patients often respond well to hormone therapy and can live for many years with the diagnosis.
