Nepali Congress leader and former parliamentarian Mohammad Aftab Alam passed away early Friday morning while undergoing treatment at Kathmandu Medical College, Sinamangal. He was 58.
Doctors confirmed that Alam, who had been on a ventilator due to critical health complications, breathed his last at 2:58 a.m. His body has been taken to his hometown in Rajpur, Rautahat, for final rites.
Alam had been suffering from heart problems and had previously suffered a brain stroke after being released from Nakkhu Jail.
He rose to national prominence after being accused in the 2008 Constituent Assembly election blast case, in which several injured individuals were allegedly burned alive in a brick kiln. The Rautahat District Court had sentenced him to life imprisonment, but the High Court later acquitted him for lack of evidence. The case remains under review at the Supreme Court.
