Flights have started again at Heathrow International Airport, the busiest airport in Europe, after being suspended for nearly 24 hours. The suspension happened due to a fire at an electrical substation near the airport.
According to officials, efforts are still ongoing to fully restore the airport’s operations. Heathrow’s Chief Executive, Thomas Woldbye, apologized to passengers for the inconvenience caused by the closure.
Although flights have resumed, it may take some more time to completely restore the power supply. This was the first time in 15 years that Heathrow was completely shut down. The last time it happened was in 2010 due to a volcanic eruption.
The fire at the HESCO substation in Hillingdon was the main cause of the power outage that led to the airport’s closure.
