The first-ever genetic test for breast cancer in Nepal has been successfully carried out at the National Public Health Laboratory in Teku, Kathmandu. It has been marked as a significant milestone in the country’s healthcare sector. According to the Ministry of Health and Population, the laboratory will now be able to perform genetic screenings for breast cancer using blood and tissue samples.

Previously, such tests had to be sent to India, but with the success of this pioneering test, Nepal now has the capability to conduct gene sequencing.
The Ministry also revealed that the cost of the genetic test at the National Public Health Laboratory is approximately half the price of similar tests in India, which typically cost around Rs 6,000.
In addition to breast cancer, the laboratory will begin regularly screening four other types of cancer samples, making a significant contribution to cancer diagnostics in the country.
