The Department of Environment has encouraged the public to improve the air condition by avoiding the act of burning solid and plastic wastes. The rise in air pollution in several parts of the country, including Kathmandu valley has been affecting the health of people. Air pollution is the greatest environmental threat to public health globally. Human activities are the only reasons for air pollution even though sometimes, it can result from natural phenomena. The Department of Environment has informed that the smoke produced from the factories, industries, vehicles, forest fires, open waste, construction sites and even from our homes are degrading the quality of air. Because of these activities, we are having the medical problems like allergies, difficulty in breathing, heart disease, lung cancer and many more.

The Environment Department has urged the public to purify air targeting the health of the children, elderly people, people with respiratory problems and pregnant women. These people are the most vulnerable to pollution impacts. Though our act may be small but can be a critical source for air pollution. That is why, the department has suggested to initiate the air pollution free activities from our home. We have to use clean energy in both industries and kitchens that helps to reduce the environmental impact. Maintaining vehicles regularly and controlling the smoke produced from roads and construction sites are required to reduce air contamination.

An Air Quality Index (AQI) of 0-50 is considered to be good enough to live a healthy life, 51-100 is moderate, while 101-150 of AQI is regarded as harmful for those sensitive people. Similarly, an AQI between 150-200 is unhealthy whereas an AQI between 201-300 is deemed to be very dangerous for everyone.
