Durga Prasai has walked free after the Supreme Court intervened in his detention.

The owner of B&C Medical College and a Hindu religious activist was released on Wednesday following a court order issued a day earlier. A joint bench of Justices Manoj Kumar Sharma and Meghraj Pokharel directed authorities to release him while hearing a habeas corpus petition.

Although the order came on Tuesday, procedural formalities delayed his release until Wednesday, when he was freed from the Kathmandu Police Complex. Prasai had been arrested on February 16 over allegations that he could disrupt the upcoming elections.

His release comes amid heightened political sensitivity ahead of the polls.
